Community hub installs heating and window improvements for more comfort and lower running costs

The Mix is a community hub in Wantage, offering skills workshops, upcycling activities, resource swaps, repair cafes, meetings and information; as well as hosting hot-desking and local groups. It provides practical ways to live more sustainably, and to bring the local community together, for greater resilience in the face of economic and environmental challenges.

The motivation for getting an energy assessment carried out stemmed from the discomfort caused by cold temperatures during events. Despite using plug-in heaters, the space remained chilly. They recognised the need for change to better serve their community.

Following the energy efficiency assessment, The Mix switched from mobile heaters to an electric heating system to ensure a warmer environment for its users.

Additionally, a radiator was installed in the bathroom for better efficiency and user comfort.

Installing secondary glazing on the single-glazed windows – a low-cost measure to install – helped reduce heat loss and draughts, resulting in a 10% reduction in heating costs. This was significant as heating accounted for 50% of the total electricity bill.

It’s now warm in here! It makes a massive difference to how we can use the space throughout the year.
